The first Chief Frantz Red Run 5k was held in 2014 following the line of duty death of Fire Chief Matthew Frantz, who passed away suddenly from a cardiac event. Despite having some heart health history, Chief Frantz took part in many 5k’s, half-marathons, and even ran his first ever Grandma’s Marathon in 2013. He was the poster child for the cardiac rehabilitation unit at Essentia Health- St. Mary’s.At the time of his death, the Minnesota 100 Club was able to provide financial assistance to the Frantz family for immediate needs. A group of Rice Lake Fire Department members and family decided to honor the life of Chief Frantz by organizing something he was passionate about doing, and so the inaugural Chief Frantz Red Run 5k was born. The inaugural event raised money for the Minnesota 100 Club to show the deep appreciation Rice Lake Fire Department had for providing help to the family of our fallen hometown hero. The Red Run 5k has been geared towards providing the community with a family friendly event all while promoting healthy hearts and a healthy community.
